I need to charge the battery on my brand new R1250R.
So, I notice the battery is quite neatly tucked away. The owner’s manual also refers to a charging socket but helpfully does not mention where this is.
So, is the charging point the power socket? See photos. If not where is the charging point?
Also is the Optimate 4 a suitable charger, and does it come with a suitable connector for the R1250R?

Thank-you.

It's says here - TecMate OptiMate 4 Dual Battery Optimiser (SAE) -Diagnoses, recovers, charges, checks & maintains your battery with CAN-bus compatibility.

Do you reckon that will come with the correct connector, and is the socket in my photos where I plug it in?
You can’t tell from the SportBikeShop ad. The Amazon link above shows the little red connector with the 351.

Amazon also sells this, model 341, which doesn’t show the BMW adapter, even though it says it’s CANbus compatible.

OK, cheers Dougl. So what I need is this - OptiMate 4 BMW
And I take it I plug it into the socket shown in my two photos above.

I'll phone probike on Monday, rather than just place a web order. With the country going into partial lock down it's hard to know what buisinesses are open or not.

Surpised my dealer didn't go over this, and take the opperunity to sell me a charger.

Gareth, if it doesn’t come with the correct plug, you’ll simply need to fit one of these.
The centre electrode is +ve, outer is -ve.

Could anyone explain how charging the battery could mess up the CAN-bus? Isn't the charge port connected directly to the battery terminals?

The accessory port, like other chassis circuits, emanates from the chassis computer. It is controlled by the chassis computer, which itself responds to key on/off.

The port becomes live when the key is turned on (or fob equivalent) and turns off ~30(?) seconds after key off. CANBUS compatible chargers can keep the port live so that the battery charges. BMW sell their brand specific charger that does the job - I can’t vouch for other brands but other members may.

Cheers Panzermann.

I’ve placed an order with Nippy Norman’s (BMW accessories specialist) for this - Optimate 4.4 BMW Can Bus Goldline DUAL Charger with FREE hook

It says - "This Goldline version is exclusive to Nippy Normans and comes with a special connector to plug directly into the accessory socket on all post 2004 BMW motorcycles AND crocodile clip connectors ."

So should be fine?

I take it then, to trickle charge my battery, I should switch on the optimate and make sure it is in Can Bus mode and with the special plug attached. Switch on the bike ignition let it go through its self-checks. Switch off the ignition and plug the charger in – then leave it to do its stuff.

I got the Wunderlich badged version from Nippy Normans (without the hook). It was configured for canbus so just plug it in. The instructions tell you how to switch to canbus mode if it isn't already configured that way

Cheers Keith. Sounds good. Is the Wunderlich charger just a re-branded Optimate? Just hope I get it before non-esstential buisnesses close down or non-essential deliveries are banned. It's a crazy new world we are living in today.

OK, my optimate 4 Can Bus with BMW plug arrived today.

I started to read the instructions, then my head started to ache. So, I skimmed through looking for anything on checking or changing the mode. I then saw you short out the charger then switch it on to change modes. Did so, and it came up in standard mode. Did it again and got it back to Can Bus.

So, switched it on with nothing connected and you end up with just the power light on.

Plugged it in to the bike port and switched it on. Now seems to be doing something. See photo.

Yup, it’s charging, the orange bars will go down and when it’s charged, the orange will go off and the upper right will go green. (That’s what mine does.)

I must say, the hieroglyphics are incomprehensible to the uninitiated. But that’s not much different to the very precise Germlish rider manual - it makes perfect sense once you have worked out the function on your Roadster yourself.
