My new-to-me 2014 R1200 R unsurprisingly had the well known rust problem at the tank filler. I’m sorting that out ok with the posts found here. In addition to the rust problem mine had a problem with the locking mechanism. It was very, very hard to turn the key to unlock the cap. So I also took the fuel cap apart as far as I could. Gave it a decent cleaning and lubricated it with graphite and it appears ready go back on the tank. But I find myself unable to put it all back together.
Have any of you taken one apart? Here is a pic of all the relevant parts (minus screws)

The second pic is a closeup of the small pieces. And the two pieces I can’t figure out where they fit are the rectangular metal strip and the black plastic squared rod, circled in red.

Hope somebody here has some pointer or can suggest a website/video which has info on this. I suppose these gas caps aren’t so unique to each bike model but I haven’t been able to find any through my searches.
Thank you for any help in advance.

I thought someone may have chipped in by now. I suspect the cap is identical in design to later models so I pulled the four screws from under the cap of mine to have a look. Unfortunately nothing was revealed (other than one of the free springs dropped down so I had to fish it out and put it back. In doing this, the key cover flap lost its return action, so I'm going to have to pull the whole cap off to remedy that. Hopefully that will reveal where everything else goes. If not, I may be asking the same question as you, Roger. 🤞

Sorry to hear that Pmann. I didn’t have any mishaps as I disassembled mine but I removed the entire filler assembly off the tank first and then took it apart on a workbench. I guess I should have been more explicit to avoid something like that happening.

You doing that to help me is incredibly nice. Huge thanks sir! Hope you sort it out quickly.

They look like the two flat pieces of springy steel upon which the keyhole flap cams act to hold the flap in either the up or down position.
In this picture, they are in place.

One wonders why BMW thought it necessary to write instructions on top of the fuel cap lock cover. The cover is pretty intuitive and even if you couldn’t initially figure it out, once you have, you don’t need to be reminded. 🙄

just a thought...while you both have it apart, put a stop across the lower most end of the filler tube and thank me later. I used a piece of stainless coathanger, bent to keep it in...it can slide back and forth as long as it cannot come out. I suppose a brass screw with a double nut on one side would work also. I put mine in around 3/8" from the bottom iirc.
I remember those pieces when I took mine apart, but do not recall the way they go together.

I know this is an older thread but am in the exact same situation. The detent on my filler cap that keeps it open during refilling stopped working so I pulled the cap apart and 2 pieces fell out.The silver "roller" and the black strip. Can't seem to see how the roller is held in place (just friction?) or where the black strip goes. Hoping somebody has a picture or diagram of the assembly. Would appreciate any help.

Same problem for me on my 2016 S1000XR. The cap didn't want to open all the way and when I pushed a little harder something popped and then it wouldn't stay open like it should. I took it all apart and found the roller, the black plastic piece, metal strips, etc. The red piece that holds the metal roller has a small piece missing around the hole that holds one end of the roller.

Has anyone figured out where that black plastic piece goes? I also can't tell where the red plastic with springs and roller goes.

@Panzermann, @Gerineldo, any more pictures? One that shows where the red piece goes maybe?

Any help will be appreciated - replacement cap is like $600!!! And that probably has a different key, right?

I finally figured out all the pieced and got it back together. The mystery black plastic bar is broken off the plastic part of the cap assembly where the red piece with the springs go.

I super glued the black piece back on and got it all back together. So far it's working but not sure for how long. Other options look to be buying a used fuel cap and moving my lock to it, or buying a racing fuel cap as a replacement like this: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256802973338339.html?gatewayAdapt=glo2usa4itemAdapt&_randl_shipto=US

Glad you worked it out - the assembled pic looks familiar now.
With the racing cap, you’d lose the locking function, if that’s important to you, and you need to find somewhere to place the cap when filling up.

I'm not worried about losing the lock function, but I do want to be able to use my SW Motech tank bag ring. I think it would still work ok.

There's no reason it wouldn't work with the tank bag ring. If you need more stand-off for clearance under the ring, the LC (2015+) Sport screen stainless steel bushings work a treat. I have them under my Givi ring.
