I don't have an RS, but I do have an R, and an R9T, and have Barkbusters on both of them. If/when I have an RS, I'll almost certainly add the same to it. I prefer the larger Storm plastics on the Roadster and the smaller VPS plastics on the R9T; there are a couple of other choices as well. The nice thing about these is that you can fit different plastics to the same spine (and buy the plastics separately). I ride in cold wet weather, and they make quite a diff. Note that the RS guards are single-point mount only, unlike for the R and R9T. I guess there's no room on the bar for the inboard mount. I wouldn't consider that a big issue unless you plan to to take your RS out bashing around in the woods.

I tried the Wunderlich set on my 1250 and they fit well and are well made but interfere with the mirrors on full lock. The mirrors can be pushed forward but that compromises rear view.
Based on that experience I don't think any will fit with a standard bar and mirror setup.

Here's pics of Barkbuster Storms on a RS (not my bike)
One benefit of the Storms, if you take a trip south in cold weather you can quickly remove the plastic part once you're in a warm climate.

I have sold the ones off my GS to a RT owner as he wanted the factory look, and I had upgraded to the more robust Barkbuster version. I think the ones on my XR are the same part#/style, just black vs white.

I have the MaM handguards on my ‘17LC. Excellent impact and weather protection.

They may not fit on a RS.

Yes, right, due to the handlebar difference.

Thank you everyone for your helpful replies.
A few takeaways for me:
  • it is possible to have hand guards on the RS;
  • they look neat as well as being practical (I was unsure about the appearance of H/Gs on a SPORTy-tourer).
  • the RS has a single fixing point inboard.
  • The Barkbuster Storms look good!
So, many thanks my R1200 colleagues.

ps: btw, what am I seeing on the handgrips on the RS photos, like coiled wire wrapped around the grips. Special grips, hot grips?
Thanks,
Selby.

That would be outboard rather than inboard, Selby. The Roadster has enough real estate for both inboard and outboard, but not so the RS. The Barkbusters have such a substantial rib that the bar ends on my Roadster did not need not be fitted, making the overall width of the bars somewhat less, and allowing the meaty part of the cover to provide maximum hand protection. I did this with my Carbon shields, meaning I had to shorten the rib accordingly and re-drill and countersunk the mounting hole. I also painted the ribs black.
The grip cover is a cricket bat grip cut to length - effectively protects the original grips from further wear and provides a very grippy surface without substantially increasing diameter.

O-rings to make the grips bigger.

I used to use Renthal soft ATV/QUAD grips pulled over the OEM grips on my F800GS and WR250R for just that purpose. (ATV because the inner diameter is the same on both sides.) I don’t find I need them on purely road bikes. If memory serves, I think others used things like cricket bat tape or “Grip Puppies”.

Thanks Sturgeon, I like the idea of the cricket bat grip/tape.

I have had a few pairs of Grip Puppies on my past bikes and my RS came with them. These are good when my gloves grip them well but my current Dianese summer gloves and the Puppies don't agree. They have somehow polished each other, becoming slippy.

All Puppies now removed and new gloves required - back to MOTOPORT Kevlar.

The search for a bigger and better grip also continues. Maybe Puppies again but the Cricket bat handle grip is to be investigated.

Thanks Panzermann, I understand re the handguards now.

I am finding RS accessories no so freely available btw, unlike the R1200R - they are 'everywhere'!

My favourite is Kookaburra brand, unsurprisingly.
