How much $ for 6k service?

Hello everyone,
Today I took the bike for it's 6k service, I was not scared of the price since the mechanic gave me heads up last year at the 600 miles one.
I arrived to the shop at 10:00am and left at 4:00pm, they need the bike to be completely cold to do the valve adjustment, and this weather does not help at all (87 at 10:00am :eek:)

A friend of mine picked me up and we went to have lunch so I didn't get that annoyed at the wait and the manager at the shop told me that next time he'll give me a loaner :). At least I can come home and kill couple of hours or I can take a ride on a "new to me" bike.

Item total was $83.79
Labor total was $388.00
Shop suplies :confused: $20.00
Tax: $34.42

Grand Total of $ 526.21


It would be interesting to see how much does the price varies based on shop, state, country.............. Mine was done by Bergen County BMW New Jersey.

so far it doesn't even have a VIN number... wish they would just send us pictures of it being built..or even better, just simply send us a ticket to watch it being built! :mob:
I agree with you. If UPS can give a tracking number to customers for a $10 package, BMW could, too. My dealer gave me verbal updates on the build date, what stage of assembly it was, when it was completed, shipped from Germany, arrived in the country, cleared customs, was shipped to him, and the arrival date at the dealership. Removal from crate and checking fluid levels only took a day. Tag, title and registration procedures took nearly four days. But it was possible for the dealer to keep me "IN the LOOP."
It's incredible what a big difference being nice makes, I'm sure it took you 3 minutes to figure out how to replace the shield, they probably didn't know how but they could just say that, get their hands on the manual and help out.
I couldn't agree more, its the little things that make a big difference but today it seems so few firms realise that.

Paid just under $200. Anything more than that is way overkill. An hour and 30 minutes is usually enough time to run the checks change the oil check the valves and do any adjustments elsewhere on the R1200R.

$500 or $600 dollars is way overboard for 6K. Unless they replace brake fluid. Gear oil, final drive service and replace a bunch of shims. That would be worth the added expense and can be done in an additional 1.5 hours. Maybe 400-500 bucks for that.

Im In Florida.

Checking the Valve Clearances can be done in 15 minutes. I think they only really check one side. Unless they find something. While your draining the oil. The Gear Oil can be done at the same time. Total time checking valves drain oil drain gear oil 30 mins. Final Drive Oil. another 15 minutes. throw in another 1/2 hour for problems. You are now at an hour and 1/2. Call it two hours total labor. Oils and any other incidentals + 150 to 200 more at most. $400 and they still make money. Most mechanics have done enough of these to be easily this efficient maybe even more effiecient.

What do they do for 5 or 6 hundred? 3 or 4 hours of labor is what it would take me to do. These guys can do it for half that depending on what they have to do. Service guys know this frame of reference and it seems reasonable.

Call around. It aint that tough to do this kind of service. Any shop can do oil Change gear oil change and valve clearance checks. You can do it. Its easy. But I prefer to have the pro's do it as long as im not paying 5 or 6 hunded that is.. If it needs valve shims Im taking it in. But I can measure run out myself.

I bought a 2010 R1200R a month ago with 7400 miles on it. It had the 6K service done 2 years earlier for $400 but the service light was on because it had been over a year. I took it in and had an annual service done at Irv Searver in So Cal. All fluids were changed and they charged me $353! They wanted another $110 for a brake flush but I turned it down and did it myself. I won't be going there again. I think I can do most routine maintenace including throttle body balance with a twinmax I have for an airhead. I just need a GS-911 reader to reset service reminder. With money I save, I can buy one($349). I'm surprised there is so much difference in cost for service. I'd think that there would be a BMW schedule for the time on each service that no way reflects the real time taken to do service.

One thing for sure. Mechanics know what to look for becasue they have worked on so many bikes. this is the difference and what I pay for. Professionals. My shop installed a line protector for the front brake. I think they had to take off that line to do it becuase its one piece. I didnt ask them to do it they did to prevent chafing of the line becasue I put a touratech handlebar extender on the handle bars causing the line to stretch just a bit at the mount. They just saw this and fixed it. Beautiful. I will pay extra for that kind of service.
My 6000 check-up was in the $200-250 range. About the same $$ as the 600 mile check-up was, surprisingly. Dealer just changed the engine oil & filter, checked all the fluid levels, lubed a few points, and checked the throttle body synch. He checked the valves but said no adjustment was necessary. Is it OK ? He told me to ''wring it out!!!'' I questioned him, and he said he has never had a DOHC to NEED any valve adjustment in only 6000 miles. TOO SOON, he said. See you at 12,000. Do you think it will need it then??? Probably NOT, he quipped. Guess everybody experience with their dealer will vary, Ehh?
This was my experience also. Because I'd already changed my own oil and filter it was $103 and change. Tech told me that BMW's recommendations changed for the 2012 model year and they hold off till 12k miles for valve adjust and the rest of the shootin' match. Did not check valves, throttle body sync or anything major. Did the diagnostics tests and said all was reading good. Told me he's only seen one bike in his experience that needed any valve adjustment and that was a guy that rode like the Biker From **** all the way to Colorado and back immediately after his 600 mile breakin.

I'll be taking mine in for it's 12k/annual tomorrow morning. will report back on results and costs. I'm taking it to an independent shop that specializes in BMW vintage bike restorations. My dealer is 150 miles away and the local dealers are just not people I'd trust my baby with.

I dropped mine off at Wagner BMW in Boston Area yesterday for my 12K service. I got a 1000RR for a loaner.

I was told the 12K mile service will be around $700. I was also planning on changing my rear tire but two weeks ago it went on the fritz and changed it early. I got a great deal online on a set of Z8's for $300 including shipping. The dealer charged me $95 to mount and balance it, taxes all in. I really liked the Z8's and I got 11535 miles out of my rear which is pretty darn good.
