New key

In reference to recent discussions on key replacement.
Today as I walked past a Mr Minit in our local shopping centre, I showed him my bike key and asked if he could duplicate it?
He looked at my key and then pulled a blank out of his key drawer.
Then showing me an electronic device said that he could set the microchip on the new key to suit the ignition. All I needed to do was have my key and bike at the shopping centre.
The total cost would be $150 (Australian).
I have a 2013 R1200R and was surprised that:
He could cut a key for my bike
Had a suitable key blank
Could set the microchip
And it would only cost $150

This all made me feel like getting a key cut, even though I don’t need one.

I guess he has some "frequent customers" for that specific equipment...

I lost my spare key on New Years day. I went to my usually reliable locksmith and he turned me down flat. called the dealership, whereas I didn't get the price, they said I would need a registration or title and driver's license. they said should take a day or two to get.
I took the appropriate paperwork, aka title and/or registration, in today and paid $114.00. I wasn't given a guarantee on when the key will arrive, but was told to call if I hadn't heard from them in a week. I kind of liked that they needed more than just my vin.#.

I ordered a extra key from the BMW dealer about 4 years ago - needed to show my registration papers. Cost was $95 - key shipped from Germany coded to bike.
