Hi to all members from Sydney, Australia on a cold autumn night. (brrrr) As I type it's 14.4C (58F)... egad, that's nearly freezing point isn't it?

Anyway, I've joined this forum to learn from others about the BMW R1200R. I've been looking at them for some time but haven't made the plunge yet. Have been riding since the early 1970s and a BMW enthusiast since the early 1980s (having owned an R100/7, R100RT, R65, R100LT and my current bike, an '88 R100RS).

I often drop in to the local BMW dealer and look at the latest R12R on the showroom floor, have a sit on it, chat with the salesman then go home and ponder the mysteries of domestic finances. Eighteen months from now I can retire and what better present to buy myself?

In the meantime I can read what others say on this forum and hope to learn as much as I can about the R1200R.

G'day. Glad to know you.
You're going to like it here. WELCOME.
I strongly encourage you to go test ride the 2012 R1200R.
Think you will appreciate the real BRAKES. Lighter and more sporty handling.
Sufficient power and torque. It's a perfect retirement present.
R100RS.....the flying brick ? Still going strong.
Keep 'em flying !

Welcome to the forum. Nice to have some other nationalities to get their riding perspective and of course great pics :)

Don't test ride the R1200R unless you're ready to buy, it will hook and you there is no escape. I was going to buy a F800ST and went to test ride it. I liked it very much but also decided to test ride the R1200R. I now have a 2012 R1200R sitting in my garage. I had little chance :)

Hi Waratah

I just joined the forum. I bought an R 1200 R Classic in January. Unlike you, I've never been a BM owner, and am so not about to retire, but it was this or a Ducati Monster, head and heart. There are times I wish it was the Duke sitting there, but... That sort of money, I wanted reliability and slow depreciation. And build quality. So the BM has been a good choice, and of course the pannier system is peerless. I think.

I'm in Hepburn Springs, Victoria. If ever your heading this way, let's have a coffee and discuss bikes.

Hi John of Hepburn. I know your neck o` the woods as I was out there in 2003, at my mates in Bendigo (he's over here now, on a sabbatical). Blimey, you've gone from drought to Noahs Ark since then!
