Hello, I just purchased a new 2012 Red Apple Metallic. I have had it about a week. Couple of quick observations. Loving the handling and power. Not loving the low seat and the throttle transitions at low speeds. Getting used to the turn signal switches. Have been using the auto off function, but it seems to turn the signals off too soon or keep them on too long. Want to install bar end mirrors and found that is not easy. I am having new aluminum bar ends machined that will accept the mirrors. Have bags, windscreen, and rear rack on order.

Welcome Pete! You sound like you are an In Charge techy :). Throttle response should smooth out with time. Did you order a Low Seat? You could swap it out for the standard height, get a custom, or get an inflatable cushion.

The dealer ordered the bike with the low seat. Seat height is right on the cusp of being too high. Problem is it does not let move back far enough.

I did order the BMW saddle bags.

I purchased Rizoma reverse retro mirrors. Got the new bar ends today and installed them. They look pretty good. Haven't had a chance to see how they will work on the road. Weather man says rain for about the next 7 days. I have Rizoma bar ends on my Moto Guzzi V7 Classic and I love them.

Welcome, it is an amazing bike that does just about everything well.

Agreed about the low speed throttle transitions. I also thought the turn signal operation was odd but now 8500 miles on and I don't even think about it anymore, it just happens. The BMW side cases are awesome. They carry a lot more than one thinks they might. I was riding home from work with a gym bag in one of the cases and my wife called and asked if I could pickup some dog kibble. Even with the gym bag full of work clothes and shoes I was still easily able to fit in a 12lbs bag of dog food.

Happy and safe riding.

Pete,

The low seat is more "cupped" so you might feel more locked in, but many people get to like it with time. If you are a lightweight guy, you could lower the bike a little by changing the expected weight of the rider, using the adjusting knob under the seat. It's set for a 185 pounder, so experiment a little.

So are we to assume you have 12 pound dog named Kibble and you put Kibble in the bag? :)

Haha, nope, The first one is 12 pounds tho but his name is Quijote, the second one is 9 pounds and her name is Dolores.

I'll never put this animals on the saddle bags, or abuse them on any form, I love them too much, they are my kids.

It might be just me, but that dog does not look happy.

Going to put mine in a crate on the luggage rack. I am sure she will be just has happy as the dog in the photos.

Will have pictures coming soon.
Not their favorite place, it took good 5 minutes and lots of dry chicken breast for them to stay put for the picture, I got Dolores right when she was ready to jump out.

Well I have managed to get in close to 700 miles in between rain storms. Need to schedule the 600 mile service.

I am really not liking the turn signals. I have small hands. Activating them is no problem, but turning them off is. I would really like a single button or a program change that would turn the turn signal off if you hit the same button again.

The low speed throttle respone is not getting any better. It is still like a light switch. I am hoping that this can be corrected at the 600 mile service.

The handling is exceptional and the thing eats up freeway miles like John Goodman at a free buffet. Gas mileage is excellent, in the 40's.

Here is a pic of the right side that shows the Rizoma mirror.

Congratulations on your new purchase , I love my 2012 Red R1200R , Hope you totally enjoy yours. By the way Red is the fastest color
:001_tt1: yes, red IS fastest! And congrats! Those mirrors are sharp. I don't know, I've gotten used to the turn signals "standard BMW" as my dealer told me. I'm understanding BMW is slowly getting away from that set up now for more conventional styling. I know I've seen extender pieces to help with switching them on and off. ...but I can't remember where off hand...
