Hello, All,

I am likely going to be in the r1200r fold within a few months. I have had my Stella! (2004 R1150Ra, arterial blood red) since 2005 and she will turn 100,000 miles within the next few weeks. She's been a great intro to BMW motorcycles, my only previous experience with powered two wheels being a Vespa--a great scoot.

Stella! has carried me pretty much all over the country, and mostly trouble free, but now she has developed a failed ABS rear servo, and I will have that repaired at Modulemasters as soon as they can get to it. Then, she will be on the block for sale and someone will get a really fine machine.

In truth, I am "only" 95% considering selling her and replacing her with a used r1200r. I'd like a 2010 or 2011, if the 2011 is not too expensive as $$$ will be a consideration. I strongly consider(ed) the F800st, but, as it was when searching for my first real motorcycle, then I kept coming back to the r1150r as the gold standard, and now it is the r1200r, though to be completely honest I like the retro look of the r1150r more---the dash esp, and I like the oil coolers right there to warm my hands when needed.
I want a white or blue one with ABS and panniers, a normal seat (5'8" on a tall day and an inseam of 31-32) with a clean service history, and smooth cylinder head covers without scratches. 5-15k miles would be ideal. Shouldn't be too hard, huh? But, those guys for sale are rare it seems!

I found your forum after being a denizen, and continuing to be a member, of the r1150r forum. Here's a nice place it seems, very similar to the r1150r section community at the other forum.

So, I am going to start asking noob questions. And of course I'll post a picture when the time comes.

Dr.Strangelove, Sounds like you really LOVE your R1150R and have shared many happy miles together. I still have a silver 2004 R1150R and am quite fond of her. The Beakster is a great bike. After 16 years together, I parted with my older R1100R to get the 2012 R1200R. It is everything I had hoped for. Do not delay in updating your riding partner. The lastest 2011-2012-2013 models cost more, but you are also getting more! I can assure you from experience, you will not regret the change, except in your pocketbook. As many miles as you ride, you deserve a new 1200. 2013 model is coming out in blue. You'll never go back. Oh, and WELCOME to the R1200 Forum. You belong here.

Thanks for the welcome!
Is there a BMW site that details the 2013 models? or is there a side by side comparison somewhere among the 2010, 2011 and 2013?

And the questions will be coming---fair warning:)

What's up Doc.

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on putting 100k on that bike, I'm far from that but I'm glad the bike will be able to take that.

As many in here, I was also looking at the F800, but ended up with a new (at the time) 2011 R1200R, I have to say, I love every single second I have spend on it.

I think the 2011+ besides the mechanical upgrades, looks better, nicer wheels, both the classic and the better one :001_tt2: The instruments look much cooler too.

95% convince on selling her???? I think you should take that 5%, sell it and use that money to buy yourself a 2011+ As far as I'm concerned, 2011 and 2012 were absolutely identical, 2013 has only change on colors, and the classic it's gone.

Don't wait for your 1200R top share some pictures.

Lots of pix on the r1150r.org forum in the great rides section. Thanks for the friendly welcome.
A 2011 with ABS and not black is hard to find! No offense to black owners, but my Stella! is red and I like color, preferably glossy color. The search continues every day.

I am on the search for a r1200r myself :). Will be my first bmw..
There is a 2012 red model in Milwaukee and one in NH somewhere for sale I believe... One of the colors I am considering as well ... Might drive up to Milwaukee soon to take a look at it if its still there. There are a few white ones for sale (used) at a Florida dealer. I am guessing you are searching through cycle trader too... That's where I saw those bikes.
A really nice used matte grey one for sale at the St. Louis dealer. .. Has lots of extras :)

Hoshiko: the classic is still there. A bunch of dealers already have the 2013 classic bikes.
And I also started off looking for an 800 .. Until I test rode the 1200r. It was love at first ride :)

I had an F800r for 13,000 miles- just about 7 months of the fall and winter of 2011. I loved every minute and mile of it, but needed a tad more power, storage capacity and extreme wind and weather protection. Enter the r1200r. I now have 12,000 miles on my 2012 Classic and have found it to be everything my f800 was and more. It solves every small issue that I had with the f800, and as much as my F800 was able, and a joy, in many riding situations, my r12r beats it hands down in every category but weight and fuel economy. As for these categories, the diff in fuel economy was an acceptable trade iff for mire hp and torque and mire road stability at high speeds and extreme weather conditions and the balance and ergonomics of the r12r makes its few extra pounds over the f800 a non starter. If you like the F800, it's ride and performance, you will live th r12r.
And, notwithstanding what Dr. Ing. Norbert Reihofer recently said, a crack team of MIT MENSA engineers and scientists have conclusively found after extended testing in and out of NASA's super double secret wind and ethos stratisphiric toll free tunnel and car wash testing ground, funded by genuine government stimulus program motorcycle shovel headed slush funds, that the r12r Classic's pearlescent glossy finish makes it balls on faster than the Matte grey version of the r12r bike- and way better looking!

From model year 2013 the BMW R 1200 R is available in the following new paint finishes:

Montego blue metallic

Magnesium beige metallic

The paint finishes Red apple metallic and Smoke grey metallic are no longer available.

I guess the classic still around.

here is n38 light gray metallic on a K-GT
It almost looks B&W, but the roundel shows blue. Not a bad color, I think.

John
I saw that one at my local dealer and was told that it is the same as the light grey for the new r1200r. It looks more grey in real, until it's in the sun and then it has a little more of a whitish color to it. on the K1600GT it doesn't look quite as shiny as I hoped..probably because its mostly on plastic parts? Am really eager to see that color on the R1200R.

I ended up with black but had actually found lots of matte white, gray and red in my original search. I was looking for the rare Biarritz Blue but never found one. (But then I suppose I can always spring for fresh paint when budgeting allows.)
