Hello-first time poster here.

I have an '07 F650GS (thumper) and have serious interest in a 2011 R1200r for sale by private owner with 28k miles.

My understanding is that these bikes are good for loads of miles, if well maintained. Is 28k something about which I should be concerned? It is not from my area, so I really do not know where I might have it looked at by a mechanic. Is there anything in particular I should look for if I go and see/ride it on my own?

Thanks

My 2014 R1200R turned 32K, no issues. Last valve clearance check, all in spec. Just insure if documented maintenance was performed. Condition of tires, age of battery, if alternator belt was replaced

Welcome to the best forum!

28k means it hasn't been ridden enough. :) I am about to cross 21k on a 2016, and rarely see a BMW for sale with less than 40k, usually over 60k. Mileage like that is minimal and not to be worried about as long as service history is available, the tires are good and not too old (less than 4 years). Ask about the condition of the tank filler hole (search this site for reference, as they tend to rust.) Also if the fuel strip has been replaced (again, search here for fuel strip.)

I’d have no immediate concerns about the mileage . Along with the sage advice already provided, I’d have the brake fluid changed just so you have a good baseline.

I bought my 2007 in 2017 with 47k on it, and although I had to deal with one unpleasant issue shortly after buying it (driveshaft failure), the bike has been great and I don’t regret buying it at all.

I wouldn't worry about the mileage, I actually get concerned if mileage is abnormally low since there's problems that arise from sitting. I bought my 2012 last year with 31K miles, didn't phase me at all. I gave it a full service - changed all the fluids, new plugs & alternator belt, valve adjustment, throttle body sync, and lubed drive shaft splines, it runs beautifully, and are all easy to do.

As mentioned rust under the gas cap and failing gas gauges are the the 2 main issues. The rust can and should be addressed. BMW hasn't solved the gas gauge problem but will replace under warranty for 12 years from date of manufacture.
