I’ve been looking at the sales photos of my ‘soon to be’ R1200RS (awaiting arrival) and the
small fairing pieces below the cylinder heads (L&R) intrigue me somewhat.

I am wondering what their purpose may be. They are small and their mounting looks semi-detached. Could they be simply cosmetic, perhaps heat shields, or have an aerodynamic role? Has any RS owner removed them?

I've seen many guesses. Cosmetic is a good guess.
Not all of the RSs and Rs have them so that tells you they're not needed.
