Hi all, I thought I would remove my filler cap after seeing some orange rust colouring. The corrosion under the filler was really bad and has rusted through in one area. I am going to clean up best I can and re-paint. I have the an abdeck ring from s1000r to fit to prevent the problem happening again. Question is- how do I repair the rust hole! Do I bother??

I cleaned mine out a few months ago and I thought it was bad but yours is worse (sorry). Personally I'd clean it all, give it a few coats of rust inhibitor stuff and maybe a little metal putty across the hole just to strengthen it a bit. The abdeck ring should keep every good once fitted. There may be more knowledgeable members who could give a reason for filling the hole properly.

That's by far the worst example I've seen after many years of looking at many pix of this disgusting mess! Good luck with the fix.

I'd be looking to use rust remover to dissolve all existing rust, then a specialist fuel tank epoxy such as JB Weld Tankweld or Permatex, to re-create the integrity and upper surface of the tank. Then paint before fitting the Abdeckring.

I'd suggest not skimping on doing it properly - you don't want to weaken the tank filler area further due to recurrent rust.

Some of those pix from the 'before' time look remarkably like illustrations from a gynaecology text-book. And I should know, for I studied gynae yonks ago. I was planning to study dentistry, but couldn't stand the thought of spending all day looking into peoples' mouths, so I took up gynaecology.

I like to dabble in the gynaecology dept. Sadly out of practise these days!

BMW keeps sweeping this problem under the table. You would think with all their engineers they could
come up with a gasket to either seal the cap or redirect the moisture (water) to the drain hole. Pisses me off , when they
ignore a problem. Oh yeah fuel strips too.

Good to see you had a successful outcome Martyn.
As a result of your post I checked the fuel tank on my 2013 R1200R and was more fortunate, with only some minor surface rust. This I did clean off and paint with a rust inhibiter.
I agree that BMW should have sorted this problem out decades ago.
Thanks for your post,
Ken

I had this filller area checked out 4 years ago not long after I purchased the bike .The dealer was surprised that as I had told them , this area is not painted .Mine had no rust They painted the area and installed the abdekring I bought from Max BMW in the US .
Very shoddy from BMW .

It is a rubber gasket that fits in the gap between the fuel tank and the filler cap ring. The purpose is to prevent moisture entering the area prone to rust. Even if you were to fit the gasket, it is recommended to still treat the unpainted area.

See below discussion for part number.

Hi- I seem to remember ordering the filler seal for a s1000rr. It鈥檚 a circular rubber ring with a thin side that seals the filler assembly to the tank and stops water getting in. I think if you search the forum for abdeck some stuff will pop up too
