Two questions from a new 1250 owner

1378 Views 32 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Dougl
1. A couple of weeks ago I bought a left over 2022 R1250R Exclusive. What makes it an “Exclusive?”

2. I don’t want to add a windscreen. Is there an option for protecting the TFT without adding a screen?

Thanks!

I wonder if the 'spoiler' that comes with the screen helps to divert airflow?
There have been many discussions on this forum about the potential for reducing screen-induced turbulence by bringing air flow under the screen. @mikeS built it into one of his fitments, then BMW brought out the 1250 with its below-screen aerofoil. Mike’s copyright case is still pending …

BMW had cutouts in screens over 20 years ago to bring airflow under the screen as well as over. My 2001 K1200RS had one.

The TFT fills the bottom third of my VStream. If I cut an inverted trapezoid

, it would have to be about 1/2 way up. I’m not sure this would provide enough flow to relieve the vacuum behind the shield. Any screen that mounts on the OEM bracket would stand out more and allow more flow on the inside of the screen. I wonder why WRS provided a cutout for the 1200R screens but not the 1250R.

This is the Wunderlich screen mounting bracket.
Interesting. It seems the mounting bracket on RC65's bike is the Wunderlich version. Maybe was put on by a previous owner and RC assumed it was OEM? I wonder how much that extra lower spoiler changes airflow with the OEM screen in place.

No. The mounting bracket and spoiler are two different items, and mine are both BMW OEM…the only piece of Wunderlich on my bike is the enlarged rear brake peg pad.

I bought the bike brand-new with one mile on it from an authorized BMW (and Ducati) dealership, and the painstakingly itemized invoice listed all parts/upgrades within the included package of options, of which the bracket, Sport screen, and spoiler were all listed, and all were OEM as originally received by the dealership from the BMW factory.

Not sure what bracket dougl is referring to, or if you misconstrued his reference to include my picture, but either way mine are 100% OEM, and if you order the OEM parts from your dealer, rest assured your setup will look exactly like mine.

The Wunderlich screen mounting bracket and lower spoiler is one piece whereas on your OEM bracket, the spoiler is a separate piece which appears to mount to the upper bracket with one screw. When I bought my bike, they supplied the upper bracket for my touring screen but didn’t mention the spoiler piece. I always wondered what that brass bolt hole was for. I’d like to know if the spoiler (OEM or Wunderlich) channels air behind the screen.
For you consideration, you could fully-DYI if you feel like giving it a try: DIY FlyScreen/minimal windscreen
and if you do - I/we would be happy to read/see the results
Okay. I’m going to do it. I’m ordering the Wunderlich bracket. I’m going to take an old smoke face shield and cut it down just enough to provide protection for the TFT. I’ve done similarly on my GS and it worked great. On the GS I used flat black spray Plasti-Dip and it came out so well other riders wanted thought it was a purchased aftermarket part.

Your encouragement has stiffened my backbone to try it again on this bike. Thanks!

I’ve not tried riding without the spoiler — it’s been on there since Day One — so unfortunately I have no basis for comparison as to whether the spoiler makes a great deal of difference in channeling and dispersing the air and how it interplays with the screen…what I can say is that the wind is clean, calm, and non-turbulent behind the screen, so I have to assume the spoiler is playing some part in that impressively clean delivery. But to what degree I can’t say. I’ll also add that when I tried the Puig Sport screen — with the spoiler — it was loud, turbulent, and just generally unpleasant…so in that case the spoiler doesn’t seem to have made much of a difference…or would it have been even worse without it?🤔

According to a purchaser on the Wunderlich website, the Wunderlich bracket does NOT come with the spoiler.

Oh, I see. OK, good to know. Thanks for that clarification. So, for the OEM sport screen there are actually 3 main pieces to buy (+screws) - bracket, screen, and optional spoiler?

I noticed this too, but couldn't find the spoiler separately on the Wunderlich site. So, maybe Wunderlich is just showing theirs mounted with them OEM spoiler?

This link will show what is included in the sport windcreen ( I also use this to look up parts diagrams, it's very helpful ).....MAX BMW Motorcycles - BMW Parts & Technical Diagrams - R1250R (K53)

I almost suckered myself into buying the lower spoiler, thinking it might help with buffeting. Then I would have gotten the Wunderlich touring screen. I disabused myself of this endeavor and put my V-Strean sport on. This isn’t bad when it comes to buffeting but it’s pretty loud.
After riding with the V-Stream sport screen, I ordered the OEM sport screen, with spoiler. I have the mounting bracket. I think this might be ok for the summer. The wind noise is loud but I expect there will be no buffeting with the OEM sport.
