I found this interesting video on you tube.
As you can see the valve opens fully at anything other than tickover, so basically it just keeps the bike quieter at idle. Kind of makes me wonder if there's any point in having it at all.
I certainly don't think it has any effect on backpressure, the design of the pipes should do that.
