I bought a used R1200R LC and it came with the top case and side bags that BMW makes. I've been underwhelmed by their storage capacity with what I normally need to store and feel like I'd be better served with something aftermarket.

Is there much of a market for the BMW cases used? How difficult is it to rekey the locks on the bags?

For my ‘07 I spent about 3 weeks looking for panniers, and about 8 weeks looking for a top case. In that 8 weeks, I only came across 2 top cases for sale and both were off of an RT. I think demand is probably much higher than supply (at least at reasonable cost).

Rekeying is easy once you figure out how to get the lock cylinder out of the panniers/top case (at least for my version of the luggage). On the first pannier I rekeyed, I disassembled the entire lock mechanism of the pannier to get the lock cyclinder out. Once out, I could see exactly how the ‘lock pick’ I made (a 4in straight piece of metal clothes hanger with a 90 deg bend in the last 1/4in) worked to retract the lock cylinder’s locking tab. I then practiced retracting the locking tab for about 15 minutes to get a feel for it before trying on the second pannier. I pulled the lock cylinder right out of the second pannier in about 45 seconds. Admittedly, I struggled to get the lock cylinder out of the top case using the same method, but just when I was about to give up and take the top case apart, I got it out.

From there, rekeiny is pretty simple.

When I sold my GSA panniers and topbox I had an extra couple of keys cut just for the cases via a website in the UK - done by sending them a photo of your key, that's it.

That way they were usable day 1 for the guys who purchased them , they could choose if they wanted to rekey them or not - might make the sale a little easier, but having said that they don't come up for sale used v often so would expect them to go quickly
