Got around to finishing the 20,000 km service by changing the brake fluid and checking valve clearances. Clearances were within spec, although inlets were close to the lower end of the range. I was tempted to adjust them but experience with my f800 suggests they are unlikely to change quickly: at 100,000 km they were the same as measured at 20,000 km.
For lifting the cams, the Haynes manual refers to the chapter for tearing down the head. The BMW DVD-ROM guidance is more specific to the valve adjustment procedure but includes a step for removing, resetting/replacing the cam chain tensioner for the side being adjusted. This seems unrelated to removing the camshafts and is not a maintenance step if the clearances do not need adjusting. Can anyone explain this mystery from the depths of the Schwarzwald?
