Today 17/11/2023 My local BMW Motorrad dealership checked the drive shaft on my bike a 2018 R1200RS SE while it was in for a recall regarding footrest fittings. My bike has a very low mileage and the guys at Lind were surprised as my bikes drive shaft failed the test and needs replacing. The work is all being paid for by BMW and I have a loan R1250GS while they do the work. Great service from Lind but worrying none the less
I will take mine to Ocean in a couple of months for the footrest fittings, I’ll speak to them before I go about the drive shaft issue as well, mine is 2015 and just over 10k miles so next service is due at 12k which will be next year if I do my normal yearly miles.

I just checked this against my VIN number here in Australia for my 2016 RS. I've been told that my bike is not affected. My bike was built week 23 of 2016 and apparently the recall only affects later builds than this. Is this what everyone else's understanding is please?
Absolute BS,
Any 1200LC and going forward is to have the driveshaft replaced at BMW mandatory service free of charge.
Contact BMW Australia and get the correct information rather than a lazy incompetent BMW dealer 🏍

The R and RS are not eligible for the drain fitment but as you say, Bill, they are eligible for free replacement of a shaft that has done 60,000km or failed/failed the test, whichever is earlier.
This is not a recall, just a maintenance activity. The drain fitment is a recall.

I was looking for the drain fitment on my 2016R, no wonder I couldn't find it after having the shaft replaced for free. I am sitting at 42,000 miles so I'm in the high mileage club per BMW. The dealer sounded a bit evasive (not sure, GS only, let me check again...) but in the end didn't fight me on it to replace it. More importantly, I wish I took a picture of it but apart from a few scratches (I assume from removal), it looked like in great shape from a rust perspective, i.e. none. I'm not qualified to comment on the actual shaft joints, seemed okay.

The recall for shaft inspection, greasing the spline and fitting the drain duck-bill does not apply to the R.

Shaft inspection and free scheduled replacement is not a recall, though - it is simply now part of the maintenance regime for all LC models. So you don’t get a recall letter - just book your bike in for maintenance.

Took my 2018 R1200R in for an MOT test today, dealer informed me that they have a recall on the bike……drain hole and duckbill valve for swing arm. Returned to pick up the bike a few hours later…..and “we’ve replaced the drive shaft….FOC of course”……the bike has 29,199 miles on it; I asked no questions knowing it’d be marketing speak.
PS my head may have been turned after spending a few hours on R1250RS demo bike😱

Seems there are different approaches for different countries. For most, the swingarm duck bill drain mod recall is reserved for GS, RT and RT-P models only.

I got my letter today (UK). Came with an amended insert for the service book.
Got a letter today, delivered first class in a MOTOR VECHICLE RECALL NOTICE envelope.

So every 12,000 miles it is recommended that the Cardan shaft is inspected and lubricated.

At 36,000 miles the Cardan Shaft is replaced.

So for the inspection at 12,000 miles;
“This recommendation is not standard content of the maintenance plan and will only be carried out at your request. A refusal on your side will not be documented in the service history”

For the replacement at 36,000 miles;
“This replace-ment will be carried out at the expense of BMW Motorrad over the full vehicle lifetime.”

I wonder how much time the inspection and lubrication takes. As it would appear that we pay for the 12,000 mile check, and BMW Motorrad UK cover the replacement every 36,000 miles.

While it doesn't specify, I'd wager that if it fails inspection it will be replaced FOC, and then the 35k mile/ 50k km clock resets.

I think taking into account the RECALL envelope, and that it says “check cardan shaft health” every 12,000 miles and that “new tester-led diagnostic method” – yes we can safely assume if it fails the test, it will be replaced.

Will be interesting to see if all bikes are initially inspected regardless of mileage.

This is not what we want to hear, but at least it is being managed.

Also note that we are talking “cardan shaft mileage, not vehicle mileage” – umm whatever that means.
