I happened to spot a Harley today that actually impressed me. It seemed like an older model (how do you tell for certain?) with older rider and pillion, and panniers covered in destination stickers. I can see the appeal of pootling along, chug a chug, in no hurry and taking in the scenery when you have no urgency to get to your destination. Not that I’m ready for that yet.
It actually might be an age thing - I remember when I rode Fireblade’s and finally the bmw s1000rr I used to say those dicks on there bmw gs just get in the way when your charging - then later on guess what I traded my s1000 rr in for - yep a gs but to be fair I enjoyed turning the tables on my ex fellow sports bike riders and quite a few did not like being beaten in the twisties by the big gs - if you’ve ever raced a hard ridden gs you’ll know they very very capable - so what I’m trying to say is it might be a general slowing down within yourself lol . But like many I feel slowing down is one thing but to get a Harley - now that’s a full stop ha ha . Unless I can have one of those hooligan baggers they race in USA -

There seems to be a trend amongst bike manufacturers to make bikes small enough for hobbits, it makes it really difficult to find a bike built for a full grown adult.
Yes hobbits with the gait of John Wayne ( showing my age now big time - the hell y’are pilgrim lol - the seats are wide and you need legs look me a giraffe as they’re so tall

I remember when the Fireblade first came out. They were considered wild, nuts and there were even a few purchasers who decided after a few weeks of ownership to trade em back in for a 600 or a 750 as it was all too much.

But then when you think about it, our OAP boxer bikes have more grunt and HP available at the rear wheel than any early Fireblade. That’s quite a thought.

In my mind it was the R1 that really made sportsbikes sort of irrelevant, I mean how much HP can you use on the road. The same thing has now happened to cars. We live in the age of the 400HP plus hot hatch, never mind sports cars!

I like the lazy nature of my R1250R, I can just bimble along on it, it is not as if it eggs me on, and being naked you are aware of the speed you are going. But yeah, this lazy old mans bike has more beans available, should you wish to deploy them, than an old Fireblade.

yes Gareth BUT if you compare like for like say the 91 blade against the top of range bmw in 91 the blade would be streets ahead in every area - similarly yes our 1250 with decent horses and more importantly real world power ie torque is not in the same league as the 2021 blade unless it’s a twisty b or a road where max speed would be around 100 - 120 mph where I think the shift cam torque would hold its own but then there’s the handling and ground clearance - I find with spirited riding it’s easy to ground the footrests whereas the blade is just getting cranked over about 50-60% of available ground clearance - horses for courses really isn’t it - I like you love the all round capability of the r1250 r - would I change it for another blade - yes if I was back in the sports bike 15 years ago mode - now at 67 my 1250 r does me just fine . Also I love just like the gs it has that street sleeper old guy look - until they see that torque and drive in action lol .

Also you would be surprised just how much power you can use - just depends on how highly you value your license lol - but hardly any would be able to use it if it wasn’t for the electronics on the high hp bikes - without anti this and mode that etc they would be virtually unrideable - 230 hp at the rear wheel and 170 kg wet weight !!

I know I can use everything I have available to me on my R1250R and my old slightly tweaked FZS1000, but you know what, I rarely do, at least not for any sustained length of time, and whilst in 1992 we all still wanted more by 2004 I’d decided I now had more than I needed and frankly ever would need.

Sure, I could use more, if I wanted to, but I don’t want to, I guess I just value my license, my liberty and life more.

10th April 2025 the new R1300R will be revealed.

I must say, I'm liking the stripped down profile. Hopefully they don't totally eliminate the practicality of the R bike's storage capabilities though. Either way, I won't be giving up my 2020 1250 ANY time soon, or maybe just ever, given the way things are going.

I wonder if the bar-end mirrors will be stock or an add-on.

I’m sure it will be a great bike, but from my uninformed point of view it would take a lot to get me off of my 1250.
Just imagine there's two of you. 1 on the R1250R, and the other on the new R1300R on your favourite road you know so well and the R1300R rides rings around you! Still going to stay with the 1250? By the way I just purchased a brand new 2024 R1250R. Here are some pictures of me and my progression from the R1100S till now.

Nice pics! I had an R1200S too, great bike but a bit long. I think the R1300R will be amazing but I'm not sure there will be many real on the road situations where it would pull rings around it's predecessor, which I think has more than enough to do quite as much as is possible on the road without losing your life or license. I'm no road racer though so perhaps I'm seeing things through too sensible eyes!
